Why a Panel Upgrade Matters
Your electrical panel is the heart of every circuit in your home. It distributes the power coming in from the utility and protects the wiring behind your walls. In a typical San Diego home built before 1990, that panel was sized for the loads of a different era — a single A/C, an electric oven, a few lights, and a TV. It was not sized for an EV charger pulling 40 amps, a heat pump replacing a gas furnace, an induction range, a tankless water heater, and rooftop solar feeding back through the bus.
An undersized or aging panel can nuisance-trip, run hot, and in some cases (Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco, Pushmatic) fail to trip when it should — which is a real fire risk. An upgrade to a modern 200-amp main with current-code breakers removes that risk, adds room for the loads you are planning, and is often a prerequisite for an EV install, a heat pump retrofit, or a solar interconnection.
