3 STEPS TO PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR BLACKOUT SEASON

In recent years, Californian wildfires and extreme weather have proven to be a serious threat. In response, several utility companies are taking a new pre-emptive measure: potential targeted blackouts with the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). Because many of these power grids are interconnected, the PSPS has the potential to impact even those outside of high-risk fire areas. This means that homeowners across the state need to be prepared and ready for their home for blackouts. You can prepare for the blackout season while staying informed and saving money along the way. As this new reality sets in, here are some energy solutions to help you future-proof your homes.

BETTER UNDERSTAND YOUR HOME
Be prepared.

As blackouts become the new normal, gaining insight into how power is used in your home is the first step to finding solutions. Home energy monitoring is an effective way to decode and stay on top of the energy consumption in your house. Generac’s PWRview Home App makes your energy use easy-to-understand so you can make smart decisions tailored to your needs. Monitoring provides a full picture of how electricity is flowing through your home, including how much energy you may be generating through a solar system. These insights are key when considering back-up options to prepare for power loss. Additionally, you can see forecasted utility savings and indicators of how you are tracking towards your energy goals. As PWRview Home gets smarter, expect to gain actionable insights, recommendations, and alerts that can help you to save more or shorten your solar payback.

GET YOUR HOME BLACKOUT-READY
Be protected.

HOME ENERGY STORAGE
The future may look uncertain, but you can be ready. Renewable energy systems like solar connected to a battery in your home allow you to have peace of mind, regardless of the condition of the grid.

Home energy storage is key, allowing you to produce, store and use your own power. Generac’s PWRcell solution helps homeowners both save money on time-of-use rates and have instant, automatic, and clean backup power ready in the event of an emergency.

When considering solar and home energy storage systems for your home, there is a range of factors to keep in mind, including the size of your home and the number of people that live in it. Using the insights from PWRview home energy monitoring, talk to your installer to design the best system for your family’s needs.

HOME STANDBY GENERATORS
Installing a home backup generator is another reliable option to maintain power during a blackout. Many of these run off of natural gas and can deliver power directly to your home. Generac’s permanently installed home standby backup generators are optimized for blackout security, as they also turn on automatically if power is lost, protecting your home at all times.

Be proactive about your energy to be ready for the future

GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES FOR SOLAR AND STORAGE

FEDERAL SOLAR TAX CREDIT (INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT)
Thinking of installing a solar energy system? This US-wide tax credit allows you to deduct 30% of the cost of a solar energy system, and potentially your home energy storage system, from your federal taxes with no cap on value. But keep in mind, this incentive is decreasing in the coming years. By 2022, the residential solar incentives will be completely phased out. So talk to your installer about what works for your home.

SELF-GENERATION INCENTIVE PROGRAM (SGIP)
This incentive is specifically for Californians who are looking to install a home battery with their solar system. Customers of SDG&E are eligible for an incentive as high as $400 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
